USDA recently created a new Pasture/Range/Forage (PRF) program designed to assist ranchers during periods of drought. PRF is based on insuring a percentage of the average rainfall in your area for up to six, two month periods. For example, coverage is available that would generate payable claims if it rains less than 75% of the average August – September rainfall. Both the historical and actual rainfall for each two month period are recorded by the National Weather Service. Claims are calculated and paid within 45 days of the end of each two-month period. This immediate relief helps cover increasing feed costs throughout the year and, because of government subsidies, it generally requires only ONE two, month period receiving 40% of average rainfall to cover the premium for the entire year.
